A2 wins World Superyacht Award

A2 (ex. Masquerade of Sole) was awarded Best Rebuilt Yacht in the 2013 World Superyacht Awards in Istanbul. The work on A2 was extensive, with her interior and hull taken back to bare steel at the beginning of the project. Over 22 months the yacht was lengthened by 4.5m, before installing a new interior, systems and machinery. Today, bearing her new name of A2, she is effectively a new yacht. She owes her new naval architecture to Pendennis along with BMT Nigel Gee and interior design by Peter Marino Architect.

Pendennis ranked 45 on the PWC Profit Track 100

Pendennis was recognised last weekend in the Sunday Times PWC profit track 100 listing. The annual league table analyses and ranks companies according to growth in profits over the last three years of available audited accounts.

Mike Carr, Managing Director commented “2013 is already a landmark year at Pendennis, as we are currently celebrating our 25th anniversary and have just commenced a multi-million pound investment into developing our onsite infrastructure. To be recognised by the Profit Track 100 listing for our consistent business performance in recent years is really the icing on the cake for us.”

Adela wins St Barths Bucket

The classic 55.5m schooner Adela is having a fantastic 2013 regatta season, enjoying three successes in as many events. In January Adela won the Antigua Superyacht Challenge, four points clear of the fleet (photo courtesy of Cory Silken). The win was followed by success in the ‘Superyacht’ and ‘Spirit of Tradition’ classes in the RORC Caribbean 600. Now this beautiful sailing yacht has added the St Barth’s Bucket to her tally, winning the ‘Mademoiselles’ class and the overall title.

The original schooner Adela was built in 1903 by John Goodman Fay & Co. Following her restoration by Pendennis in 1995 the yacht has been a regular visitor to the yard undergoing several refits, including 2000, 2005 and 2010. Archive footage of her restoration can be seen the Pendennis Youtube channel.

Directors undertake Apprentice Job Swap

On Friday 22nd February four company directors at Pendennis swapped roles with four of the company’s current apprentices to learn about the value and impact of the scheme for Apprentice.tv (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rH8VRnhfJNU&list=PLaWOtGcX1byEd4mQd1aCsJnmE16WNe32k&index=1) to be shown as part of National Apprenticeship Week which takes place from 11th-15th March. The Directors experienced the daily work life for an apprentice undertaking job swaps within the fabrication, surface finishing, and electrical teams. In return, the young apprentices were given an insight into the workload of the senior management team as they shadowed them for an afternoon. Local MP Sarah Newton also joined in, spending several hours working alongside Luke Hocking in the finishing department.

Pendennis Celebrates 25 Years

Pendennis Shipyard Ltd was born out of a local yacht building company which was relocated to Falmouth Docks in 1988, the first contract being the build of 125' ketch Taramber, followed by a major refit of the 228' three-masted schooner Adix. A management buy-out in 1993 by the current Managing Directors, Mike Carr and Henk Wiekens, was followed by a major rebuild of the 1903 classic 170’ schooner Adela.

Throughout 2013 Pendennis will be organising numerous local and industry events to celebrate our anniversary. We will also be posting historic photos and video footage to our Facebook and YouTube pages.

Pendennis Wins Development Approval

Pendennis Shipyard have received approval from Cornwall Council for improvements to the yard's shoreline facilities including the creation of two wet docks and a wet basin to hold back the tide alongside the north facing area of the yard. These plans will run in conjunction with the shore based proposals that were approved earlier this year.
